Semi Final Match Ups

July 4, 2010

We are down to four teams – who can stop the German team from destroying all in their path? If Spain play like they did against Paraguay then Germany will easily make the finals at Soccer City.

England Crash and Burn

July 1, 2010

I have resisted the urge to blog about the dismal performance of England at the 2010 world cup – but heres my two pence worth… for what its worth.

England Down And Out

England Down And Out

The England team I saw lacked spark, imagination and pace – against all of the teams that they played I would not rate any of their defenders as the best in the world, at least not any better than what most of the players play against week in week out in the English premiership, yet they were unable to break through and create any real chances. There was a real lack of quality crosses into the box and what appeared to be an unwillingness to beat the defenders.

Thomas Mueller, the German who scored two goals against England, said;

“It is difficult to have so many ‘alpha males’ and have them row in the same direction,”
“You don’t only need chiefs, you also need a few Indians. You need people who are willing to do the hard work.”
“It may be a problem with England that players are simply not mentally prepared to go that extra mile for their team-mates.”

I think that its unfair to single out any individual player as there were many who had bad tournaments Rooney, Heskey, Terry, Barry and of course Capello.

I can only tell of the agonising disappointment I felt I watched at my local sports bar/pub, The Westlake Arms in the southern suburbs of Cape Town with my wife and friends around me as we went down 4-1. Above all the team seemed to lack passion – which is what made it even worse!

Semi Final Cape Town Tickets

June 28, 2010

According to the Fifa.com website there could be tickets available for the semi final game between Argentina and Germany.

There live ticket table (https://lmsfwctickets.fifa.com/LMS/MatchAvailability.aspx) shows that tickets are currently not available which normally means they are waiting to be released from organisations and corporate/government who will declare they do not require them – this could mean there are only a few hundred to go on sale to the public.

In order to stand a chance for these tickets you should be outside one of the official ticket offices now! There are stories of people waiting in Cape Town for two or three days for the last 16 match between Spain and Portugal.

Of course the other alternative is to be at the Waterfront in Cape Town next Saturday and enjoy the atmosphere, a few beers and the game – thats where I will be 🙂

Round of 16 Round Up

June 28, 2010

There has been plenty of action from the second round of the 2010 world cup in South Africa;

Carlos Tevez

Carlos Tevez celebrates

Uruguay 2 – 1 Korea Republic
Match 49 – Round of 16 – 26 June
Quick Review: Luis Suarez two goals showed class as Uruguay easily overcame Korea in a fairly one sided match

USA 1 – 2 Ghana
Match 50 – Round of 16 – 26 June
Quick Review: Ghana the last representatives of the African continent held the nerve to send the USA home and deservedly won 2 – 1
http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/matches/round=249717/match=300061503/summary.html

Argentina 3 – 1 Mexico
Match 52 – Round of 16 – 27 June
Quick Review: A dominant display from Argentina will send clear messages to the rest of the teams in the tournament. Tevez second strike was sublime!
http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/matches/round=249717/match=300061502/summary.html

Germany 4 – 1 England
Match 51 – Round of 16 – 27 June
Quick Review: Germany easily scored 4 goals against a poor England side who were dropped out of the 2010 World Cup – the big question is what will be done about goal line technology?

Toothless Portugal 0 – 0 Brazil

June 25, 2010

Portugal V Brazil turned out to be a very low key game except for the high amount of yellow cards in the first half (7). kaka was suspended as he recieved two yellow cards in the previous match with Côte d’Ivoire and Brazil also rested star striker/play maker Robinho which probably had a large impact on the quality of the match.

Christiano Ronaldo was voted man of the match as he was probably the most exciting player in an otherwise dull match played in Durban.

This dull draw ensured Portugal went through to the 2nd round even though Côte d’Ivoire won their game 3 – 0 against Korea.

2010 Fifa World Cup Programmes

June 17, 2010

The official Fifa world cup programme system has been set up slightly differently to the way football programmes normally work. There is one set programme for the opening group stages and then one for the knock out rounds and then one for final which will be Johannesburg on 11th July.

I have two programmes for the opening group stages that I am selling on Ebay – these were both bought when I attended the France V Uruguay match in Cape Town on the 11th June. If you are interested in owning one then please have a look at the auctions on Ebay.co.uk (anyone can bid, I will post worldwide);
