The game went into extra time as no team could find a way through the defences as the game became very physical resulting in 11 yellow cards and one red card (after a second yellow). The goal came in the 116th minute with a beautiful strike by Andres Iniesta (who was also voted the man of the match).

Both teams often regarded as the best in the world had never lifted the coveted World Cup with the dutch coming the closest on two occasions in 1974 and 1978 loosing in the final both times.

Uruguay 2 – 1 Korea Republic
Match 49 – Round of 16 – 26 June
Quick Review: Luis Suarez two goals showed class as Uruguay easily overcame Korea in a fairly one sided match

USA 1 – 2 Ghana
Match 50 – Round of 16 – 26 June

Argentina 3 – 1 Mexico
Match 52 – Round of 16 – 27 June
Quick Review: A dominant display from Argentina will send clear messages to the rest of the teams in the tournament. Tevez second strike was sublime!

Germany 4 – 1 England
Match 51 – Round of 16 – 27 June
Quick Review: Germany easily scored 4 goals against a poor England side who were dropped out of the 2010 World Cup – the big question is what will be done about goal line technology?

Cape Towns Giant Vuvusela

June 4, 2010

In Cape Town there is a high way that was never finished… the road comes to a stop at the end of a bridge (dont ask – its a long story!)

Hyundai have decided they would build a massive Vuvusela (the very loud plastic horn that will be heard through out the world during the South Africa World Cup) off the end of the unfinished over-hang.

There is also a rumour going around they plan to hook up two giant truck horns and blast them every time a goal is scored at the Cape Town stadium during the World Cup. Only in Cape Town!!

World Cup Ticket Sales – 9 Days To Go

June 1, 2010

Table Mountain from the Waterfront

Friday 28th May there were 160,000 world cup tickets released for sale to the general public, by 1st June 100,000 tickets had been sold, on the Friday the Fifa ticketing platform had crashed (again) and caused more problems for people waiting in line through out South Africa – police had to be called in to control upset and angry crowds in Cape Town and Johanesberg.

Of the 100,00 world cup tickets sold;

  • 53,000 tickets were sold through FNB ban branches
  • 30,000 were sold at the Fifa website and Fifa call centre
  • 3,500 sold at local South African shops Shoprite & Checkers

At present the only world cup tickets remaining in Cape Town are a few category 1 tickets are available for the 8 matches to be played in the city. There are still thought to be 50,000 – 60,000 tickets remaining for 50 games through out the rest of South Africa.

This is expected to be the last large ticket release before the world cup starts on the 11th June – Fifa say there should be more tickets available later but in much smaller quantities.

Jerome Valcke, Fifa general secretary, said “We are getting close to a 97 percent average attendance, something which corresponds to the figures of Germany in 2006.”

Table Mountain

Table Mountain from the Waterfront

David Green, Chief Executive Officer at the V&A Waterfront says,

As one of Cape Town’s best-known tourism jewels, and a neighbour to the Cape Town Stadium, the V&A Waterfront is a prime catchment area for locals and visitors in search of the football experience that will thrill the Mother City during June and July. We’ve partnered with some big brands in football such as Coca-Cola, adidas and MTN to ensure an interactive offering which is tailored for fans in search of World Cup celebrations in a safe and secure environment. And, as a hub for celebrations all year round, welcoming on average 1, 7 million visitors every month, and more than 160 000 every New Year’s Eve without incident, we are fully equipped and ready to host the influx of visitors during the World Cup period.

The Waterfront will be split up into 4 fan zones;

  • Eagles’ Nest and Lions’ Den – Breakwater Parking Rooftop
  • MTN Fan Zone
  • Quay 4 (Market Plaza) Spectator Zone
  • Hyundai Spectator Zone

Each of the 4 zones will offer football fans the chance to watch all games live, eat great food, drink great beer and wine, listen to live music, buy local food and drinks and have the chance to take part in interactive Football games!

For more information on how to get there and what you can expect head on over to the dedicated Waterfront 2010 website (http://2010.waterfront.co.za/).

Be sure to take special notice of the car parking restrictions and pedestrian routes as the Waterfront is expecting thousands of extra visitors during this time (http://2010.waterfront.co.za/Parking.aspx)

A WAG free 2010 World Cup

May 12, 2010

The word on the street is the 2010 world cup will be a WAG (wives and girl friends) free zone.

The WAGs are a group wives and girl friends of England football players that attract the journalists, paparazzi and all other vultures of the media world where ever they go – they tend to stick together in packs of 3 or 4 and can be seen heading from designer shop to designer shoe boutique occasionaly stopping off in trendy bars and spas along the way.

Notable WAGS include Victoria Beckham (married to David Beckham), Coleen McLoughlin and Cheryl Cole.

WAGS

The WAGS on patrol

The list of reasons why they are staying in the UK during the 2010 world cup range from a few of them having new born babies, the cold (?) South African winter and not enough designer shops or spas! The England manager, Fabio Capello, has also issues rules on time allowed with partners during this years world cup to limit distractions and dramas.

This Englishman living in Cape Town (I’ve been here for 3 years) is greatful they’ve never heard of the luxuries of Cape Town!
